EMDR therapy is a very efficient and effective technique that helps resolve traumatic incidents (or any difficult experience).
Unresolved experiences compromise our coping ability.
Eye Movement De-sensitization Reprocessing is when the client's eyes follow a moving object (the therapist's fingers, for example), this back-and-forth pattern alternately stimulates the right and left hemispheres of the brain. This allows the information from the traumatic incident to come from suppressed memory up into the client's awareness in order to be confronted and fully processed, therefore complete, emotionally-discharged and reconciled. An incident that is fully discharged (no emotional content left), can be reframed and the client can move forward with it no longer affecting them.
For clients who prefer to close their eyes, Ezreena uses a different form of bi-lateral stimulation: the client holds two small 'paddles' which alternately vibrate. When the paddle in the left hand vibrates it sends a signal up the left arm and stimulates the right hemisphere of the brain (which is where the emotion is stored).
When the paddle in the right hand vibrates it sends a signal up the right arm and stimulates the left hemisphere of the brain (where reason, rationale and logic are stored).
This process stimulates the information attached the traumatic incident in order for it to get 'unstuck' and be fully processed and then resolved: mentally, emotionally and physically.
Often there are physical sensations that have been stored in the body so when the disturbing incident has been fully processed the body releases the stuck energy, which then allows the body to heal.
Because EMDR can be very powerful and unlock suppressed information, it can bring forward a lot of old memories and strong emotions. For this reason I would prepare for a 1.5 to 2 hour session.
Often when a client is using EMDR to process, there can be multiple flashes of memory surface - this can be rapid and very effective.
